We provide physio for lower back pain and many other types of spinal discomfort, including:

Acute: New onset of pain, often from injury or strain.

Chronic: Pain lasting 12 weeks or more.

Lower Back Pain (Lumbar): The most common type, often worsened by prolonged or repetitive movements.

Upper and Middle Back Pain (Thoracic): Often linked to stress or muscular tension.

Sciatica: Nerve-related pain radiating from the lower back into the back of the leg.

Sacro-iliac Joint (SIJ) Pain: Often an overlooked and underlying cause of low back pain, this type of pain arises from the joints that connect the spine to pelvis.

→ Post Operative: Back pain following a lumbar procedure, aiming to restore movement and build strength. We also treat people with an upcoming surgery to alleviate pain and increase comfort.

Physiotherapy Exercises For Lower Back Pain

Our physiotherapists design exercise programs to relieve and prevent lower back pain, based on your symptoms, ability, and impairments.

These may include:

  • Bed-based exercises (e.g., knees-to-chest, knee rocking) to reduce pain and stiffness in severely limited patients
  • Stretches and rotation exercises (e.g., cat-cow, child’s pose, book openers) to improve spinal mobility
  • Pelvic exercises (e.g., pelvic tilts, glute bridges, bridge marches) to strengthen abdominal and gluteal muscles as well as improve pelvic stability
  • Resisted exercises (e.g., low rows, pull-aparts) to strengthen back muscles and correct posture
  • Centralisation exercises (e.g., McKenzie extension progressions) to re-direct referred/radiating pain back to its origin and help relieve disc-related pain

These exercises are examples only and are not guaranteed to fix your pain. Never start a new exercise routine without consulting a qualified practitioner. Our experts will guide you through physiotherapy exercises for lower back pain, designed to relieve discomfort and improve strength safely

Back Pain Physiotherapy – FAQs

Is bed rest recommended for low back pain?
No. Prolonged bed rest is generally discouraged. Gentle movement and staying active within comfort limits usually help reduce pain and speed recovery.
Can a physio help with back pain?
Yes. Physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat all types of back pain using manual therapy, exercise, and education.
How long does it take to recover from back pain?
Recovery time varies. Acute pain may resolve in a few weeks, while chronic pain requires longer-term management.
Will my back pain come back after treatment?
Our goal is long-term relief. By addressing the root cause and improving capacity, physio can reduce the risk of recurrence significantly.
